A woman’s life changes the moment she becomes a mother. She undergoes
both physical and emotional changes that mold the rest of her life to
fit the role of a caregiver. The primary bond that she experiences with
her child is through breastfeeding. It is an intricate act and forms a
lifelong bond that can only be understood by the mother and her child.
During this breastfeeding week, The Daily Star looks into the benefits of breastfeeding and how new mothers perceive it.
“Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for the child but for the
mother as well. There is no substitute for breast milk,” says Dr Fazlul
Kabir Rumi, Medical Officer at civil surgeon’s office.
Bearing a child takes its toll on the body, especially after giving
birth. Stretch marks and hair fall are common along with fatigue and
weight gain. But the body seems to have its own mechanism to prevent
some of these things, in the form of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding keeps the weight of the mother under control along with blood pressure and diabetes, said Dr Kabir.
“Since I breastfeed my daughter, my appetite has increased. I manage
to eat just the right amount and don’t indulge in my hunger. By doing
so, I’ve not only maintained my weight but lost a few pounds too!” says
Irin, a mother of a six-month old infant.
Breast milk contains essential vitamins, minerals and fats which is
vital for the child’s growth and development. Breast milk develops the
immune system of the baby and strengthens the immune system of the
mother as well, said Dr Kabir.
